Here I’m sharing a step by step guide to making your own travel makeup brush roll. With holiday season fast approaching and a pandemic still ravaging our nation, many of us would seek to rely on online shopping for all our holiday needs. But with just a few straight lines of stitches you can make this makeup brush roll and gift it to yourself, friends, and family.

This is a great project for beginners. You can pick fun fabrics, add simple sewing, and organize your makeup brushes. And for a zero waste approach to traveling, take this on your next trip. You can also pair this travel case with my travel toiletry roll and my travel utensil roll.

Environmental Impact of Shipping

Online shopping is fast, convenient, and sometimes even economical. However, it often entails shipping. And while many shoppers qualify for free shipping, there is an environmental impact of shipping, which includes air pollution, water pollution, acoustic, and oil pollution. It also includes greenhouse gas (GHGs) emissions.

Ships are responsible for more than 18 percent of some air pollutants. The International Maritime Organization (IMO) estimates that carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions from shipping were equal to 2.2% of the global human-made emissions in 2012 and expects them to rise 50 to 250 percent by 2050 if no action is taken.

Air Freight vs. Sea Freight

There is a perception that cargo transport by ship is low in air pollutants, because for equal weight and distance it is the most efficient transport method. This is particularly true in comparison to air freight. However, because sea shipment accounts for far more annual tonnage and the distances are often large, shipping’s emissions are globally substantial. There are now over 100,000 transport ships at sea, of which about 6,000 are large container ships.

Collective Carbon Footprint

The total environmental impact of sea and air freight shipping, it is worth noting that CO2 isn’t the only pollutant emptied into our atmosphere. If you are looking solely at CO2 emissions, then air shipping creates more emissions per kg/mile than ocean shipping. Freight transportation is a large contributor to air pollution. Air pollution emitted from transportation contributes to smog, and to poor air quality, which has negative impacts on the health and welfare of U.S. citizens.

The atmospheric impact levels incurred by different freight modal choice decisions are analyzed to provide insights on the relationship among freight modal split, oil price change, and air quality. Freight transportation has become a major source of energy consumption and air pollution. Emissions rates vary significantly across different modes of transport. The fact that shipping enjoys substantial tax privileges has contributed to the growing emissions.
